As part of our commitment to delivering a rich, broad, and ambitious curriculum, a group of our students recently visited the Crucible Theatre to watch a powerful adaptation of Pig Heart Boy. The day offered more than just a theatre trip—it was a carefully planned cultural experience that supported both curriculum learning and wider personal development.

Excitement and anticipation were in the air as students arrived at the theatre, taking time to enjoy lunch before the performance began. Once inside, they were completely absorbed by the compelling story, drawn in by the atmospheric stagingdynamic performances, and thought-provoking themes that the production so powerfully explored.

Pig Heart Boy, based on the novel by Malorie Blackman, explores ethical dilemmas, family loyalty, and the realities of medical science—all of which complemented students’ studies in English while prompting meaningful reflection and discussion. Many students described feeling deeply moved by the performance, demonstrating the power of live theatre to challenge perspectives and stimulate emotional and intellectual growth.

This experience forms a valuable part of our approach to cultural capital—ensuring all students, regardless of background, have access to high-quality artistic and cultural experiences. It also reinforces our focus on reading and literacy, encouraging students to make connections between literature and real-world issues.

By engaging with live theatre, students not only develop their appreciation for the arts but also gain confidence, empathy, and a deeper understanding of the human experience—skills that are central to both academic success and personal growth.
