At Ash Hill Academy our curriculum is designed to be ambitious and designed to give all learners the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in life. Our focus to provide opportunities for students to develop lifelong interests whilst acquiring important social, emotional, cognitive, and physical skills. This is achieved across the curriculum including; subject lessons, EPC, CEIAG, Form Time and Enrichment. This time can also be used to provide support for the academic challenges faced by students each day in school.

Through developing the aforementioned skills students will improve their self-esteem while developing higher aspirations in both current academic situations and in pursuing long term careers. The provision of our enrichment varies through clubs and activities that encourage our students to pursue special interests such as music, sport and artistic performance.

Today, children in Delta academies achieve academic results that are equal to and surpass those of students in more affluent areas. We recognise however that academic GCSE results are not the only inequalities we must seek to eradicate for our learners. There is a wealth of literature from bodies such as the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) that identify cultural capital as a potential barrier for social advancement for many from poorer backgrounds, especially in the North of England. A lack of cultural capital can in itself inhibit the extrapolation of meaning from difficult texts or concepts. On a different level, students who go on to college, university and into good careers will interact with people exposed to high levels of cultural capital. This can inhibit confidence and social ease.

TIB (This is Beyond) is a VMG programme that compliments the TIC (This is Culture) programme. Together they expose students to knowledge, experiences and cultural capital that they may not otherwise come across. They promote curiosity, further research and build confidence.

TIB is not a taught session in the traditional sense, rather it is a weeklong focus on a particular landmark, location or environment through all elements of the Academy. A VMG session per week is the only direct teaching. The rest is completed through TV displays, screen savers, blue line work, social media, physical displays, competitions and becomes part of the fabric of the school. Through this, students become equated with landmarks as structures which are notable or unique. They will recognise human-made landmarks as impressive structures built by humans and natural landmarks that are so extraordinary that in order to ensure that they are preserved for generations to come, they are protected in national parks. This then compliments and extends the Geography curriculum and aspires students to achieve with intentions of visiting these astonishing landmarks.

Students receive a high-quality booklet containing pictures, links for further research, factual details and space for making notes that they can take home and use as a tool for further exploration.

Student instructions:

1. Every Wednesday you will study a different topic based on your subject lessons during form time.

2. There will be a PowerPoint slide and video with all the information that is required…

3. Your teacher will read this information to you as you make notes.

4. You will then answer the questions in your own personalised workbook.

5. You will then be quizzed on the topic studied on the blue line every Friday.
